They should offer Elvish as a foreign language class in shool.
"Who is the bigger fool, the fool or the fool who follows him."

There was a joke about that in my school newspaper... of course, they got some info wrong, but oh well.
I'm actually thinking about writing a Quenya textbook someday... I saw a book called "The Complete Guide to the Languages of Middle-earth" in the bookstore once, but it got some of the grammar wrong.

That's a textbook I would actually read. I'll see if I can find that book, it would be a pretty cool read. Then I can also embarrass my friends and family by talking to them in Elvish languages in public.
I've already mastered Grendel speech.

I'll try to make the textbook interesting! And I wouldn't embarrass my friends and family - I'd disgust and scare them!
What's Grendel speech?

Grendels are creatures from the Creatures computer game. There are 3 games now, but they didn't do to well and the official website shut down because they can't afford to keep it up. It's a shame, too. They were great games, I have all 3. The only places you can get them now are Amazon.com, eBay, and maybe a garage sale. I highly recommend them.
My best friend and I were very obssessed with the games and began to speak like Grendels. There's no real grammatic basis to the language, just grunts and a few words.

LOL! I'm sure you drove your family nuts!

Actually I just freaked out my classmates.
I drive my family nuts with my unhealthy LOTR obssession. Sometimes when I'm bored I'll bring up some random fact of Middle-Earth to bug them. It's very fun.
Me: See the old dwarf next to Gimli? That's his father, Gloin. He was one of the dwarves that traveled with Bilbo in the Hobbit. He has a bigger part in the book. He-

Yeah, I disturb my classmates and my family, too! Except I think my LotR obsessions is perfectly healthy, though much of my life now revolves around it.
A few dialogues:
During the Council of Elrond in FotR
Me See? Frodo's looking at the Ring, and the Ring is creeping him out because it's reciting the Verse of Rings in the Black Language!
Family Will you shut up! Who cares?
Before class
Me (insert number) days before RoK comes out. Aren't you excited?
A Friend No.
Me Are you kidding me? It's going to be the best movie ever!
A Friend Quiet down! It's just a movie!
Me (silently fuming)
And sometimes my brothers will remark on something LotR-related and I'll expand it into a huge serious discussion. Then one of them will catch himself and refuse to discuss LotR anymore.

On my vacation we went to Orlando. We drove there and I brought my Lord of the Rings book to read in the car. But the first 2 hours of the trip I was talking about LOTR. My family(mainly my dad and older sister) shut me up for a while. So during the trip I was either reading LOTR, talking about LOTR, or playing my TTT GBA game, while narrarating.
Me: In this game, though it's TTT, you play the last half of FOTR. You start out in Cadarhas pass as either Aragorn, Gandalf, Frodo, Legolas, or Eowyn. I've beaten a game as Legolas, but I'm starting as Frodo and Eowyn to see how the game changes. Frodo is really a very fast chara-
My family: For the love of God, shut up about LOTR! I swear if you utter one more word about the L-word, I will grab you by your neck and strangle you!
I'm still not sure if they were kidding.

hahahaha.
on the note of languages... i creeped out an old teacher of mine one day...
*me swearing about something or other in the hallway to my friend*
"alison, quit that! don't use that kind of language in my hall!"
"alright... would you mind if i swore in drow then?"
"uh... no...."
and i've forgotten all the drow swearwords now... *sigh* but i still remember... ol'elghinn, velbol ol'elghinn? (assassination, what assassination?"
(drow is a d+d language by the way to those who may not know)
and then there was me and a friend learning a bit of klingon for a while.
oh right, and now there's me on a chatroom for a different website (non LOTR related)....
grimsdale: you notice that i used the term "holbytla", it's gondorian for hobbit.
me: you f*cking idiot, no that's the term the Rohirrim use!!! Theoden King refers to merry as master holbytla!!!! the gondorian term is "perian" or "periannath", now how hard is to cross-reference the indexes and appendices?? huh? HUH???
or other such rants. i also do not like the above person. otherwise i would correct politely.
Pippin: The closer we are to pants, the farther we are from kilts.

Hello Shieldmaiden.
I loved this thread, it will be quite usefull when I finally get around to learning Elvish. I wanted to learn it over the summer, but there goes that idea :)
By the way, languages is sort of a longtime hobby for me, and I have a book you might be interest in.
How To Learn Any Language by Barry Farber.
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0806512717/qid=1060577907/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/103-2541255-6006219?v=glance&s=books
It doesn't have vocabulary or grammar, or anything like that. But it's a good all-around book about how to go about learning, the methods/techniques one should use.
